Suinco ESG project turns industrial boots into sustainable flip-flops
Suinco, the largest pork cooperative in the state of Minas Gerais, has taken another step forward in its sustainability agenda by implementing a project to reuse Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) used by its employees. Each year, around one tonne of industrial boots made of PVC and EVA is recycled and transformed into sustainable flip-flops customized with the cooperative’s brand.
The products are distributed through internal initiatives such as raffles and corporate events, with a focus on employee recognition and strengthening organizational culture. The initiative aligns with ESG guidelines — Environmental, Social and Governance — combining environmental responsibility, social engagement and sound corporate governance.
The project was developed after the cooperative identified an opportunity in the disposal of used boots. Rather than directing them solely to conventional recycling, Suinco opted for a creative and symbolic solution capable of generating internal value and tangibly communicating its environmental and social commitments.
Sustainability in practice and brand identity
The reuse process is carried out in partnership with a specialized supplier responsible for processing the material and manufacturing the flip-flops with the cooperative’s visual identity. Suinco is actively involved throughout all stages, ensuring product quality and alignment with its values.
By engaging employees in the proper disposal of PPE and returning a useful, personalized item, the initiative strengthens a sense of belonging and recognition. The project also carries strong symbolic value, transforming industrial waste into an everyday product that bears the cooperative’s brand and reflects pride in being part of the organization.
In addition to reusing boots, Suinco is now assessing new opportunities to repurpose other waste generated at its processing facilities, such as cardboard and plastics, with the potential to create new products like eco-bags. The goal is to expand the positive impact and consolidate a model that goes beyond compliance with environmental regulations, promoting innovation and responsibility throughout the production process.
The initiative further reinforces Suinco’s positioning within the sector as a company that integrates technology, sustainability and people development into its growth strategy, translating ESG concepts into practical actions while inspiring good practices across the animal protein industry.
