MBRF Achieves “Zero Landfill” Milestone at Paranaguá (PR) Facility

Plant now directs all waste to composting and co-processing, eliminating landfill disposal

MBRF has announced that its Paranaguá facility, located in the state of Paraná, Brazil, has achieved the Zero Landfill milestone, eliminating the disposal of waste in sanitary landfills. All waste generated at the plant is now directed to alternative solutions such as composting and industrial co-processing.

According to the company, 70% of the waste generated at the facility is sent to composting, a process that converts organic materials into biofertilizers. The remaining 30% is directed to co-processing in cement kilns, where it is used as an alternative fuel in the production process, replacing fossil energy sources.

The Paranaguá plant is the first animal protein production unit within the company to reach this milestone, following a series of initiatives aimed at improving waste management and advancing circular economy practices.

“Achieving Zero Landfill is the result of rigorous waste management, with a focus on circular economy principles, traceability, and environmental compliance. With these advances, MBRF reinforces its commitment to scalable and sustainable solutions aligned with the best global practices in the food industry,” said Giovani Amboni, Executive Environmental Manager at MBRF.

According to the company, all operational units are guided by the objective of minimizing waste disposal in landfills. At the Paranaguá facility, the progress was made possible through the review of internal processes, engagement of operational teams, and the adoption of technical solutions that allow waste to be transformed into productive resources.

The waste management system also includes digital traceability, supported by software that monitors waste flows, volumes, and final destinations, ensuring transparency, control, and environmental safety.

The project was also supported by technical partnerships with specialized waste management companies, which assisted in identifying and implementing environmentally appropriate disposal solutions.

Circular Economy

Circular economy is one of the six pillars of MBRF’s sustainability platform. The company’s waste management strategy focuses on reducing, recycling, and reusing materials throughout the entire value chain, from suppliers and integrated producers to its own operations and post-consumption stages.

In practice, the company seeks to combine operational efficiency with environmental impact management, setting targets to continuously reduce the volume of waste sent to landfills.

Composting is currently the company’s primary disposal method, allowing organic waste to be converted into biofertilizers and reintegrated into the production cycle.

In 2025, 69% of MBRF’s waste was directed to composting, recycling, energy recovery, or other recovery operations, highlighting the company’s progress in transitioning toward a more circular production model.
