SIAVS offsets carbon emissions and uses clean energy

Being the meeting point for sustainable chains such as animal protein is a mission that demands a position aligned with the sector’s purposes. It is with this aim that the organization of the International Animal Protein Fair – SIAVS 2024, held between August 6th and 8th, in the Anhembi District, in São Paulo/SP), prepared a series of initiatives focused on environmental preservation and emissions reduction.

One of them was the guarantee that the energy used in the event will come from clean sources.

This is because the Brazilian Animal Protein Association (ABPA), organizer of SIAVS, hired I-REC (International Renewable Energy Certificates) for the event, which is a global system for tracking environmental attributes of energy that issues certificates that prove the origin of the renewable energy used.

The certificates were issued by Trix Energia, a participant in this edition of SIAVS. In practical terms, the traceability certificate proves that the energy demanded by SIAVS was applied to the electrical system from a renewable source.

Each certificate represents 1MWh, which is equivalent to 60 kilos of CO2 not emitted in Brazil. The initial projection is that almost 1.5 tons of CO2, which would be emitted with the energy demand of the event, will be neutralized by the system.

Emissions – In another line, ABPA will contract the neutralization of emissions from the actions carried out during SIAVS.

The contracting of the neutralization will cover several lines: food cooking; assembly and disassembly of the event; transportation in third-party vehicles; travel, indirect emissions, treatment of waste generated by the event, among others.

In the 2022 edition, 158 tons of CO2 were neutralized related to emissions from actions carried out during the event.

The neutralization of greenhouse gas emissions was carried out by the company Neutralize Carbono, following the guidelines established in the regulations of the Brazilian Association of Technical Standards (ABNT).

“SIAVS’s role is to host meetings and represent huge production chains, which have a global presence and are guided by sustainable purposes. These are principles that guided previous editions of the event, and which were expanded in 2024”, highlights the president of ABPA, Ricardo Santin.
